This is an exceptionally personal drawing for me, and I’ve been working on it, on and off, for months.
But I wanted it to be the first drawing of 2011. It’s kind-of become the norm now for me having to adjust the contrast and brightness on my traditional pieces because my scanner tends to wash out a lot of the tones and make them look quite flat, and it’s the only way I can get them anywhere close to how they physically look. Other than that, I try not to do any digital tweaking. With this one, however, I had to use a little bit, because I couldn’t get the ‘shining heart effect’ with ink. So all of the redness was painted in Photoshop, and a lens flare added for emphasis. Unfortunate, but I’m happy with how it turned out. 
This is all about self-belief and starting anew. I thought of doing something involving a phoenix, but that seemed in a way too obvious, even though I love them and all they represent. I felt that to completely ‘exorcise’, I had to delve deeper and do something that wouldn’t be so transparent. I also wanted to make the girl look a little bit like me, but not be obvious. So she has a few of my facial details, but I kept her hair dark and gave her a different-shaped face.
The inspiration came, as a lot of my images do, from music; here from my favourite band, My Chemical Romance.
Three songs off their new album Danger Days helped to shape this picture: Bulletproof Heart; Summertime; and Save Yourself, I’ll Hold Them Back, but I chose lyrics from Bulletproof Heart because they were the closest to what I wanted visually.
Anyway, there will always be times in life when we experience darkness, and it will surround us, completely blocking out the light of everything else like a stormcloud blocks out the sun. When that happens, it's only natural that we should retreat into ourselves: it offers protection and a little relief; it can feel better to shut your eyes and see nothing than to keep them open and still see nothing. It's part of the healing process. But there will always come the point where we must realise that whether it was created by us or thrust upon us, the darkness is our own, and exists only because we let it. Time is a healer, but fate will only do so much. The hard work is down to us, to realise that someday we will have to bear our souls again, to risk the hurt and sorrow, and then to finally have the courage to allow it. To expose your heart once more to the world, and let yourself become your own light to find the way out of the darkness.
